You are in a trade. It is running in your direction. Level I is moving cleanly. The question every trader asks at this moment is the same one: how far is this going to go?

Most traders answer that question emotionally — they exit when it feels right, when they get nervous, or when they have made enough to feel satisfied. Every one of those answers is wrong, because none of them are based on what the market is actually telling you.

The Average Daily Range answers that question with data. It tells you — before the session even opens — approximately how far price is statistically likely to travel during the trading day. That number becomes one of the most useful reference points you have for managing a running trade and assessing the quality of a setup before you ever enter it.

The ADR doesn't tell you where price will go. It tells you where price has consistently gone — and that consistency is enough to give every trade a measurable context that emotion cannot provide.

What the ADR Is — and How to Calculate It

The Average Daily Range is the average number of pips a currency pair travels from its daily low to its daily high over a defined lookback period. The standard calculation uses the previous 5 trading days — one full week of recent price behaviour.

The formula is straightforward:

ADR = Average of (Daily High − Daily Low) over the last 5 days

Your MT4/MT5 chart template includes an ADR indicator that calculates this automatically and displays the current day's range alongside the average. You do not need to calculate it manually — just read the number on your chart each morning during your pre-session routine.

What the number tells you:

How much of the ADR has already been used today — if the ADR is 80 pip and the day has already moved 65 pip, the statistical expectation for further extension is low. The remaining range is thin.
Whether a setup has room to run — if the ADR is 100 pip and the day has only moved 20 pip so far, there is substantial statistical room for the London move to develop fully through all three levels.
Where the NYC Reversal is likely to target — when the ADR is met or nearly met, the return move toward the midpoint is the high-probability next step in the cycle.

The ADR is a Guide — Not a Guarantee

Some days will travel significantly beyond the ADR. News events, high-conviction institutional moves, and exceptional accumulation setups can produce days of 150% or even 200% of the average range. The ADR is a statistical baseline — a reference that gives your trade context, not a ceiling that stops price moving. Use it to assess probability, not to cap your targets.

ADR Reference Ranges — The Major Pairs

Different pairs have different typical daily ranges. Knowing the approximate ADR for each pair you trade gives you an instant sense of whether a day is running hot, cold, or average — without having to calculate anything. These are approximate baseline figures based on typical market conditions. Your live ADR indicator will show you the current 5-day average which is always more accurate than any fixed reference.

GBP/USD 80–120 pip avg. daily range The primary pair for this method. Wide range, strong institutional participation, clean stop hunts. Highest priority. EUR/USD 60–90 pip avg. daily range Tighter range than Cable but extremely liquid. Clean patterns. Strong secondary pair for this method. GBP/JPY 120–180 pip avg. daily range Widest range of the majors. Fast moves. Higher reward but proportionally wider stops required. Advanced pair. EUR/JPY 80–120 pip avg. daily range Similar range to GBP/USD. Good institutional participation. Strong London session setups. AUD/USD 50–75 pip avg. daily range Tighter range. The 50-pip minimum target makes statistical sense across all the major pairs because 50 pip represents approximately 50–65% of the average daily range on GBP/USD and EUR/USD — the two primary trading pairs in this method. You are targeting a move that the pair makes almost every single day. That is not an ambitious target. That is a realistic one with a properly sized stop behind it.

On GBP/JPY with a 150-pip average range, the same logic applies — your target scales with the pair. Wider range, wider stop, proportionally larger target. The ratios stay consistent across pairs.

How to Use the ADR in Practice

The ADR is not a standalone tool. It is one layer of context that you layer on top of the cycle position, the Asian range, and the session timing. Here is exactly how it integrates into your pre-session routine and your live trade management.

When	What to Check	What It Tells You	How to Act
Pre-session	What is today's ADR? How much range has already been used since the 5 PM reset?	If little range has been used — the day has room to run. If significant range is already used — the London move may be compressed.	Compare the Asian range size to the ADR. If the Asian range is 30 pip and the ADR is 100 pip, there is 70 pip of statistical room remaining for the London move.
At entry	How much ADR remains from the entry point?	If 60+ pip of ADR remains — the full 50-pip target has statistical support. If less than 40 pip remains — reduce target expectations.	Adjust your target to the remaining ADR rather than the standard 50 pip if range is compressed. A 30-pip target on a compressed day is still a valid profitable trade.
During the trade	Is the ADR being approached or met as the trade runs?	ADR being met during Level II or III signals the move is statistically exhausting. Reversal probability increases significantly.	Begin tightening the trailing stop more aggressively when the ADR is within 10–15 pip of being met. Prepare to exit rather than hold for more.
NYC Reversal assessment	Has the ADR been met or closely approached by the New York open?	ADR met or nearly met at 9:30 AM ET is one of the five conditions for a valid NYC Reversal setup.	ADR confluence significantly raises NYC Reversal conviction. All five conditions present including ADR = highest-quality secondary setup of the day.
Skip signal	Has the ADR already been fully met or exceeded before London opens?	A pair that has already moved its full average range during the Asian session is statistically exhausted. The London move may be weak, absent, or reversed.	Consider skipping this pair today. Shift attention to a correlated pair that has not yet used its ADR. Covered in Module 6 — Pairs Selection.

The Overextended Day

Occasionally price will move 150–200% of its ADR in a single session. These days feel incredible when you are on the right side — the trade keeps running far beyond your target. The trap is using these outlier days to calibrate your expectations. A day that travels 200 pip on a pair with an 80-pip ADR is exceptional. It is not the baseline. Manage every trade to the ADR as the primary reference — and treat anything beyond it as a bonus, never an expectation.
