The Asian session runs from roughly 7:30 PM to 3:00 AM Eastern Time. Most retail traders either ignore it entirely or try to trade it like any other session. Both approaches miss the point completely.

The Asian session is not a trading session in the conventional sense. It is a preparation session. Everything that happens during those hours — the consolidation, the slow widening, the traps set on both sides — is the institutional framework being built for the London move that follows. The better you read the Asian session, the better prepared you are when London opens and the real cycle fires.

The Asian session tells you the story. London delivers the punchline. You need to read the story before the punchline lands or it won't make any sense.

This lesson teaches you how to read that story — specifically: how to identify the range, how to measure it, what its size tells you about the move to come, and what to watch for as the session progresses toward the London open.

What the Asian Range Actually Is

The Asian range is the high and low established during the Asian accumulation session — from the time meaningful price activity begins in Tokyo and Sydney through to the approach of the London open. On your chart this will appear as a period of relatively contained, oscillating price action that gradually defines its boundaries over several hours.

Your MT4/MT5 chart template automatically draws a box around the Asian session. The top of that box is the Asian high. The bottom is the Asian low. The distance between them in pips is the Asian range. That single number — the size of the range — is one of the most important pieces of information you will assess before every London session trade.

Why the Range Size Matters

The Asian range represents the amount of energy being stored before the London move. A tight range means high pressure building in a small space — when it releases, it releases fast and far. A wide range means the pressure has already been partially released — the move that follows is likely to be more measured.

This is exactly like a spring. The tighter you compress it, the harder it fires. A 20-pip Asian range is a compressed spring. A 60-pip Asian range is a spring that's already half extended.

The Three Range Conditions

Every Asian session will fall into one of three range conditions. Knowing which one you're looking at before London opens changes how you size your trade, what you expect the stop hunt to look like, and how aggressively you approach the setup.

Under 30 pip The Wound-Up Spring Maximum pressure. Expect a fast, aggressive stop hunt and a strong directional run. Highest conviction condition. Full position size when the setup confirms. 30 – 50 pip Standard Range Normal accumulation. Valid setup. Standard position sizing. The most common condition — expect a clean stop hunt and a reliable Level I run. Over 50 pip Blown-Out Range Lower quality condition. The spring has partially released already. A valid Asian range is 50 pip or less. When the range exceeds 50 pip before London opens it does not mean there is no trade — it means the trade is lower quality and deserves a smaller position. Never abandon the method because the range is wide. Adjust your size and raise your confirmation threshold.

There is also a fourth condition worth knowing: the blown-out shifted range. This occurs when the Asian session range itself has shifted significantly from the prior day's close — the range is still tight at 30 pip, but it formed 80 pip above or below where the prior day ended. This is still a valid accumulation range. The tightness of the range matters more than its location on the chart. Mark the boundaries, measure the pip distance, and proceed with the same rules.

What to Watch As the Session Develops

Reading the Asian session is not passive. There are specific things to observe as the range develops that give you information about what the London session is likely to bring. Here is exactly what to track.

Which side spikes first	The first directional spike during the Asian session is usually inducement — pulling retail traders into a position before the real move reverses against them.	If the first spike is upward, the real move may be downward. Note the direction and stay alert for the reversal during London.
Equal highs or equal lows forming	Two or more touches at the same level creates a visible stop cluster. The institutions can see this too. That level is a target for the stop hunt.	Mark equal highs and equal lows as they form. These become your stop hunt targets for the London move.
How price behaves near the boundaries	Clean rejection at the boundary means the range is firm and respected. Multiple wicks poking through and closing back means the boundary is being tested and traps are forming on both sides.	Multiple wicks through a boundary = higher probability that the stop hunt will push through that level in London. Prepare accordingly.
Volume behaviour	Volume should be relatively low during the Asian accumulation phase. A volume spike during Asia — especially near a range boundary — is unusual and often signals an early institutional move.	Unusual volume during Asian hours deserves attention. Check if the range has shifted or if an early stop hunt has already begun.
Range tightening as London approaches	In the 30–60 minutes before the London open, price often consolidates into an even tighter band within the Asian range. This is the final coiling — the last compression before the spring releases.	A tight pre-London consolidation inside an already tight Asian range is one of the strongest conditions in the method. The Pre-London Checklist

Before the London session opens, you should be able to answer all five of these questions:

1. What is the Asian range size in pips?

2. Which range condition applies — wound-up spring, standard, or blown-out?

3. Which side spiked first during the Asian session?

4. Are there equal highs or equal lows forming visible stop clusters?

5. Where are the stop clusters relative to the range boundaries?

Common Mistakes Reading the Asian Range

A few patterns come up repeatedly when traders are first learning to read the Asian session. Knowing them in advance saves you from repeating the same errors.

Measuring the range too early — The Asian range is not final until the London session begins. Measuring it at midnight or at 1:00 AM and then not checking again is a mistake. Ranges can and do expand in the final hours before London. Always take your final measurement 15–30 minutes before the London open.
Trading the Asian spikes — Price can make aggressive moves during the Asian session that look like clean setups. They are almost always inducement. The method does not trade the Asian session. Observe and mark — do not enter.
Ignoring a blown-out range — A range over 50 pip is still usable. The mistake is treating it identically to a tight range. Lower quality means lower size and higher confirmation threshold — not a skip.
Missing the shifted range — If the Asian range formed 60 pip above yesterday's close, it can still be tight and valid. The location of the range on the chart is less important than its size. Do not dismiss a clean 25-pip range just because it sits in an unusual place.
Over-marking the chart — Mark the range boundaries and the obvious stop clusters. Do not draw support and resistance lines through the entire Asian session. Clean charts lead to clear decisions. Cluttered charts lead to paralysis.

Mark the range. Measure it. Note which side spiked. Find the clusters. Then wait for London.

A Note on Holidays and US Sessions

When there is a US market holiday, the Asian session tends to be larger and more active than usual. Liquidity is thinner and the institutions use the reduced participation to extend the range further than typical. On holiday weeks, widen your range quality threshold slightly — a 60-pip range on a holiday week may perform more like a standard 40-pip range on a normal week. Use judgement and reduce size accordingly.
