Most traders size their trades based on how confident they feel. High confidence — bigger position. Low confidence — smaller position. This approach guarantees one thing: that emotions determine risk. And when emotions determine risk, a losing streak eventually produces a position so large it causes real damage to the account.

Position sizing in this method is not based on confidence. It is based on a fixed percentage of the account — calculated from the stop loss distance before the trade is placed. The result is a lot size that is mathematically consistent every single session, regardless of how the trader feels about the setup.

You cannot control whether a trade wins or loses. You can control exactly how much you risk on it. That control — applied consistently — is the difference between an account that survives drawdown and one that doesn't.

The 1–3% Risk Framework

The rule is simple. On any single trade, risk between 1% and 3% of your total account balance. Never more. The percentage you choose within that range depends on the setup quality and your current account condition.

1% Conservative When to Use It New to the method. In a drawdown period. Lower confluence setup. Monday session. Counter-weekly-bias trade. Any time uncertainty is elevated. 2% Standard Default Setting Normal conditions. Tuesday or Wednesday session. Layers 1 and 2 confirmed. No significant drawdown currently. This is the number most sessions should use. 3% Elevated High Conviction Only All five confluence layers present. Tight Asian range. Textbook stop hunt. Weekly bias fully aligned. Account in a positive run. Rarely used — reserved for the cleanest setups. The Non-Negotiable Ceiling

3% is the absolute maximum on any single trade. Not 4%. Not 5%. Not "just this once because the setup is perfect." The ceiling is 3% and it does not move regardless of conviction, confidence, or how many confluence layers are present. A single losing trade at 3% is a manageable setback. A single losing trade at 10% is a crisis.

Why Percentage-Based Sizing Works

Percentage-based position sizing does three things that fixed lot sizing cannot:

It scales with the account. As the account grows, the dollar value of 2% grows with it — meaning position sizes increase proportionally without any conscious decision to "size up." Compounding becomes automatic.
It shrinks during drawdowns. When the account is down, 2% of a smaller balance produces a smaller dollar risk. This natural reduction in exposure during difficult periods is exactly the protection mechanism a trader needs when results are poor.
It removes the sizing decision from the emotional state. You are not deciding how much to risk based on how you feel. You are calculating it. The number comes out of the formula — not out of your mood.

The Calculation — Step by Step

The lot size formula is the same every single trade. Four inputs. One result. Run it before every entry — not after.

Example: $10,000 account · 2% risk · 7-pip stop · GBP/USD Account balance $10,000 Risk percentage 2% Dollar risk per trade $10,000 × 0.02 = $200 Stop loss in pips 7 pip Pip value (standard lot GBP/USD) ≈ $10 per pip Dollar risk ÷ (pips × pip value) $200 ÷ (7 × $10) = 2.86 lots Rounded to nearest 0.1 → 2.8 lots The 23-Pip Stop Version

Same account, same 2% risk, but with the standard 23-pip stop: $200 ÷ (23 × $10) = 0.87 lots — rounded to 0.9 lots. The tighter the stop, the larger the position. The wider the stop, the smaller the position. This is by design — the formula automatically adjusts lot size to maintain the same dollar risk regardless of which stop you use.

The Pip Value Varies by Pair and Account Currency

The $10-per-pip figure above applies to GBP/USD traded in a USD-denominated account at standard lot size. Pip values differ on other pairs and in accounts denominated in other currencies. On EUR/USD the pip value is very similar. On GBP/JPY it is different and depends on the current USD/JPY rate. Always verify the pip value for your specific pair and account currency using your broker's pip calculator before calculating lot size. Most brokers provide this tool directly in the platform.
